Dear Friends,
This week we would like to go camping. Spending time outdoors can be peaceful and fun. Keep your eyes and ears open because there is plenty to see and hear in the beautiful outdoors. This week we will practice pointing to each word as we read our poem. We will find the beginning letter of words and will practice writing our name and the word the. We will work with counting and learning about numbers. We have some forest animals for you to cut out, and color is you wish, and use to learn about more and less. We will learn about walking in the woods and some animals that live in Maryland with some mini-movies. We hope you and someone in your family can take a walk in the evening to use your senses to learn about the animals who come out at night. We have also included some ideas for making a great snack for your evening walk that you can take with you. We hope you are enjoying our website and are keeping track of the days until the first day of school. Your teachers can't wait to meet you and are already planning for next year!

Writing PracticeBeginning writers can practice spelling words and their name outside. This week continue to practice writing your name and the word "the."
You can use: sidewalk chalk a paintbrush and water on the sidewalk your finger in sand or flour on a cookie sheet. Talk and DrawThe following questions can be used to help your child get started in drawing a camping picture. Helping children think before they start is important because it helps them organize their thinking. Talking through what they would experience when camping will help them think of important details to put in their picture. Where would you like to camp? Think of different places you can camp. Some people like to go to the mountains to camp, others camp in the woods. Some people even camp in their backyard. Be sure to draw details in your picture that will give clues about where you are camping. What would you have at your campsite? Would you sleep in tent, a camper, or a cabin? Are you going to draw a night time picture or a day time picture? Be sure to include clues to show where and when your story/picture is happening. Let's Read TogetherThis week's poem is about sleeping outdoors. Read this poem with a grown-up. Practice pointing to each word as you read it together. Count the number of words in each line. Count the number of words in the whole poem. Read the poem again. Point to the first letter in each word. Circle the first letter in each word. Read the poem again. Can you find the word "the"? The word "the" is one of the kindergarten heart word, words you will practice to read automatically. In kindergarten we will learn to read and write words we use a lot in our reading and writing very quickly. Underline the word "the" in the poem. Sleeping Outdoors Under the dark is a star, Under the star is a tree, Under the tree is a blanket, And under the blanket is me. ~Marchette Chute
Let's Count! In kindergarten, we work to build a firm foundation in number sense; understanding number relationships and the way numbers work. Our students learn about number concepts by using manipulatives as well as using numerals and symbols. This week we are focusing on counting. Help your child practice counting by printing the two sheets of forest animals. Begin by having your child simply count. Watch to see they are using their finger to point to one picture as they say the numbers. Start with counting to ten, and if they are ready move on to twenty then to thirty and on.
Cut out the pictures. Have your child sort the pictures by animal. Have your child compare two sets of animals. Ask which has more? Fewer? Looking for a challenge? Ask your child to find two different groups of animals that make ten altogether. There are three different sets that make ten.
