July 16 - 22, 2023
Dear Friends,
This week, let's go to the city! What cities have you visited? Cities are busy places with people working, playing and relaxing day and night! This week we will be reading a poem about the city. The poem has lots of sounds it in you might hear in the city at night. Be sure to look at the slide show that shows Manhattan in the evening. Look closely at the pictures. What shapes do you see? We learn about plane shapes and solid shapes in kindergarten. We will work with plane shapes this week. This week practice writing the word up. How many times is the word up in our poem this week? Please continue to practice writing your name the kindergarten way too! This week take a walk around your neighborhood or in the city to look for shapes. Draw a picture of a city this week. Use shapes in your picture and be sure to add details of what you would expect to see in the city.
We hope you are enjoying your summer and are looking forward to starting school in August! Don't forget to countdown the days! We are too!
Love,

Let's Read Together!Have you ever visited a city? Manhattan is a part of New York city. It has many tall buildings called skyscrapers, lots of lights, and many busy people hurrying from place to place. It's also a place filled with noises. The poem you are going to listen to this week is called Manhattan Lullaby. Think about what a lullaby is and what it sounds like. What would a city lullaby sound like? The poet uses sounds in this poem to help you to know what sounds you would hear in the evening and night time the city. Read the poem several times and think about the words. Do you hear rhyming words? Then, practice writing the word "up," which is a Word Wall Word we learn in kindergarten. Circle or highlight the word up in the poem. Now practice writing the word up.

Our students need to be able to recognize and name the shapes, as well as talk about the important attributes of the shape. How many sides does each shape have? Are the sides the same length? How many corners does each shape have? :
Shapes are everywhere! This week, tell someone in your family about what you know about shapes. Print out the shape sheet in the resource section on this page. Trace the shapes with your finger. Tell what you know about the shapes' sides and corners. What are the names of the shapes? These are the shapes you will be talking about this week. squares rectangles triangle
Walk and TalkThis week, let's take a walk and look for shapes. You can take your walk around your neighborhood or in a city. Look closely at the buildings where you are walking. What shapes do you see? What kind of lines do you see? Straight or curved? What shapes do you see mostly? Which shape is the most difficult to find? Are there more straight or curved lines?
Talk and DrawBefore talking and drawing this week, be sure your child has studied the pictures in the Manhattan at Night slideshow or you have looked at pictures of other cities with them. Talk about the differences and similarities of city living and living in Potomac, Maryland.
Think about a city you have visited. Close your eyes and make a picture in your head of a city. What do the buildings look like? What shapes do you see? What else do you see in your mind picture? Are there people? Trees? What kind of transportation vehicles do you see? What else is important in your city mind picture? As you get ready to draw, think about the lines and shapes you saw in your mind picture. You might want to draw with a pencil and a ruler first before you use crayons. Take your time and think about what you talked about before you started drawing. Be sure to add details to your picture to show that this is a city scene. What colors will you use mostly in your city picture? |
